I want to be fully upfront when I write this article; up until recently I had not known of “the dead internet theory“. However I had in some ways shared a good portion of thoughts that were in line with what it’s all about.
As more and more AI content surfaces across the web (such as articles, videos, and other digital content), standing out and gaining traction with whatever your goal might be is increasingly difficult. That relates to so many areas as well, whether it’s launching a website, app, digital platform, YouTube channel, social media profile, and everything in between.
To be clear, there’s a fair chunk of “the dead internet theory” that I’m disregarding (all of the conspiracy level stuff, government control etc) but what I see as valid is what it keys in on relating to the internet being full of bots and fake accounts. That’s something I can get behind and believe in. I’ve continued to see a lot of discourse across the internet on tech websites, posts on X, discussions on threads, etc, that all key in on the idea that so much content being produced online is being produced by AI.
Let’s be honest, we know that’s the case and are well aware of the large amount of AI generated content (articles, videos, images, etc) that is flooding the internet. But here’s where my concern is with this:
If so much of the internet is not created by humans, how much harder is it to stand out with genuine content?
What do you think?
